Sienna

We quite enjoyed Sienna, despite the rather grey weather (which cleared up around the time we got to the top of the tower for the panoramic view from the Museo del' Opera)

The banners represent the contrada, or district - there are 17, each of which is represented by an animal (except for two, a tree and a tower).  In summertime there is a horse race around the square, with one representative from each contrada - a tradition that has been going on for centuries!  All in all November was probably a safer time to visit.

The wolf is one of the symbols of Sienna, which according to legend was founded by the son of Remus (who together with his brother Romulus were supposed to have been raised by a she-wolf).
