Tuscany - November 2004

San Gimignano Florence Sienna Vinci

We joined Cindy's mother and Steve for a week in Tuscany, between Florence and Sienna.  The place we stayed at is a working vineyard and olive oil farm called Fattoria La Ripa, near a beautiful village called San Donato in Poggio (Poggio being a small hill).

  

The house was reputedly at one time owned by Mona Lisa's father, and was part of her dowry when she got married. Talk about staying somewhere with character!

 
 

 

It turns out that late November is olive picking and pressing season!  We were privileged to get to see the owner's olives in action at the local press.  He was very proud of the way they follow the traditional methods to ensure that they don't get heated and the oil stays as pure as possible.
